In the Shadow of Benton End
For the past five months, a group of artists, have been visiting the historic Benton End House and garden, united by their admiration for Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines. They became the Inspired by Benton End artists.
The group—comprising Dominica Yannaghas, Talitha Hart, Lynne Campen, Annabel Ridley, Sarah Figlio, Judith Glover, Caroline Fish, and Rebecca Moss Guyver—has met monthly to “walk in the footsteps” of Morris and Lett-Haines at the site of the East Anglian School of Painting. There, they’ve drawn, painted, observed, and exchanged ideas inspired by the house, garden, and the artists’ legacy.
I have been reading about Cedric and Lett and letting their influence take me with them. Yesterday I took my travelling egg tempera kit with me and today I have been looking at other artists, including Cedric, to figure out how to paint a still life outdoors that feels like me and uses colour the way Cedric does when he did that.
There is going to be an exhibition that marks the beginning of the Inspired by Benton End artists’ shared creative journey. Preview night 7pm Friday 11th of April, with the exhibition open to the public on Saturday 12th (10am to 5pm) and Sunday 13th (11am to 4pm).
Artwork will be available for purchase at Hadleigh Old School, 5 Bridge Street Hadleigh Suffolk IP7 6BY enquiries via email to hadleigholdschool@gmail.com
