Observing the Sound
egg tempera on panel framed in a St Ives limed white frame, 39 x 39 cm, November 2022
When I was about halfway through this painting, a painting I had arranged as a colour study and to relate to my last painting, ‘Tiptoe the Cat’, I decided I needed a name so it would all come together and feel meaningful. It took me almost a whole day. Poor Patrick looked at me in pained disbelief when I asked for his help. Finally, I decided to just start reading about some of the objects. At first, I thought the Pig was going to the be key figure but eventually I realised I had been channelling Guan Yin, again, the whole time:
‘The name Guan Yin is a short form for Kuan-shi Yin, meaning "Observing the Sounds (or Cries) of the (human) World"
